Technical Overview
Overview & Function
The Kohler GM104661 is the APM402 service replacement controller for compatible Kohler standby generators. The controller is the brain of the standby system: it watches utility power, starts the generator on outage, manages warm-up and transfer, monitors engine vitals, and logs faults and exercise history. When the original APM402 fails or its display goes dead, the generator cannot be trusted to start automatically. Installing the GM104661 service controller restores full automatic standby operation with factory calibration.
Fitment & Compatibility
GM104661 is specified for Kohler standby models equipped with the APM402 control platform. Confirm APM402 on your generator spec sheet or the label inside the controller enclosure before ordering. It mounts in the factory controller location and connects to the existing engine and transfer-switch harness. Because it is the factory service replacement rather than an aftermarket equivalent, all original communication protocols to the transfer switch are preserved.
Technical Construction & Specifications
The controller ships with the APM402 firmware family and the standard Kohler operator interface: backlit display, tactile navigation keys, and sealed enclosure rated for the generator housing environment. It reads the standard engine sensor suite including oil pressure, coolant temperature, RPM, battery voltage, and output voltage and frequency. Event logging, exercise scheduling, and Modbus communication follow the APM402 specification, so building-management integrations continue to work unchanged.
Installation & Maintenance Guidelines
Controller replacement should be performed by a Kohler-authorized technician with the generator locked out. Record all exercise schedules, voltage settings, and communication addresses from the old controller first. After the swap, verify firmware revision, re-enter site settings per the service manual, run a full simulated-outage transfer test, and confirm exercise scheduling resumes. Retest transfer-switch timing and re-torque all harness connections to spec.
